50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Jasalyn Thorne of Jasalyn Thorne Photography

We are well on our way with Vancouver Mom’s 50 Essential Portrait Photographers, which showcases the high calibre of talent that we have right here in Metro Vancouver. Today, we’d like you to meet Jasalyn Thorne, owner of Jasalyn Thorne Photography – Baby Hotel.

Why did you get into photography?

I began photographing people and things from a very young age. Coming from a family of photographers, it was only a matter of time until I discovered the sheer bliss of catching that perfect moment! I love art, I love making people happy and I get to do both using my gift as an artist.

Tell us a bit about your company.

Baby Hotel is the second branch of Jasalyn Thorne Photography, weddings being our first. As a natural course of life, a lot of our past wedding clients began their own families a few years later and we were delighted to be asked to join them in watching their families grow, capturing the beautiful moments at each stage of their lives.

We offer luxury family and baby photography, captured and preserved in heirloom quality albums and prints, using such luscious fabrics as Japanese silks and rich satins in our products. We use top of the line albums which preserve your images against fading. They will look just as vibrant and colourful for years to come.

We offer a very personal experience where we will come to the home for the session and photograph the children in their own environment. We find it easier for children to be themselves in their own home and that’s what we strive to capture, their true selves, as their parents know them.

How would you characterize your style of photography?

Our style can be described as natural, artistic and full of life.

Who are your clients?

Our clients are parents who love and appreciate the art of the photograph. They are people who are often times photo-enthusiasts themselves, they understand that photos are an important part of life and that their child and memories are worth investing in.

What should your mom clients expect when working with you?

As mentioned before, we offer a very personal experience. The photo session will usually take place in the home or outside at a favourite family location. First contact will be followed by an invitation to come and visit us at the studio so clients may view the different options we have available for their art. Sessions can last anywhere from half an hour to 2 hours, depending on the child’s age and energy level. We try to make the experience fun and relaxed because that is when people will open up and often times even forget that they’re being watched and just have fun and love on their kids. It’s not a rare thing to see us down playing in the sandbox or pretending that we’re dinosaurs with the kids, just ask any of the parents! I think that we have just as much fun as they do and that’s exactly what we’re going for because then the children start to play with you and then you get those sweet moments when they are uninhibited, laughing and playing, showing their true self to the world! It’s so rewarding when you know that you’ve captured something real.

Shortly after the session, we will post the images to a private online gallery where parents and family can preview the images in preparation for ordering. If wall prints and canvases are going to be ordered we will put together groupings of images that compliment each other to make photo selection easier. Design factors such as wall colour, location, frame choice and size of the area where the art will be displayed are also discussed to make sure that all of the images will flow well together for the space decided for them.

Anything else to add?

What can I say, we love what we do!
