  • Imagination Stories Bring Play

on Dec 3, 10 • in Play • with Comments Off

Guest post by Andrea Firmani, VancouverMom.ca Reviewer. As a young girl, my English grandma would send me books-on-tape and those tapes became one of my favourite presents to receive. I would listen to them at night before going to bed and enjoyed creating the characters in my head. I can still vividly remember listening to Matilda by Roald Dahl. Local storyteller Stef Green of North Vancouver is the talent behind StefStation. Her collection of CDs provide delightful short tales for the two to five-year-old crowd. Stef has a flare for sharing stories with preschoolers in a way that engages them in imaginative play and encourages them to physically act out the characters and their experiences

on Nov 17, 10 • in Play • with Comments Off

Skating is an activity that children can begin to appreciate as soon as they are confident walking, running, and balancing. At this early stage, it’s a good idea to simply take your child out on the rink and show her how much fun it can be. One day, your preschooler is pushing a milk crate around the ice to get a “feel” for her skates; before you know it, she’s skating backwards and twirling like an Olympic contestant. Here are some tips for introducing your child to skating, whether you’ve got a future Isabelle Brasseur or Wayne Gretzky on your hands

  • Review of In My Patch and In My Forest

    on Nov 16, 10 • in Play, Shopping • with 2 Comments

By Gillian Benke, VancouverMom.ca Reviewer. We’re always looking for new and fun books that both our kids will enjoy. A while ago we were given In My Tree by Sara Gillingham and Lorena Siminovich. I didn’t realize at the time that this adorable book was part of a series, but we just got the opportunity to read In My Patch and In My Forest. Published by Chronicle Books, the series is just lovely. In each story there is sweet little felt finger puppet that sticks out through the layered cut outs that are in the centre of each page

  • Beautiful Fall Walks in Vancouver

    on Nov 12, 10 • in Play • with 1 Comment

Photo: Capilano River Hatchery (Salmon Hatchery) @ Capilano River Regional Park by Hyougushi, on Flickr. With our long, relatively mild autumn weather, Vancouver is the ideal city for a crisp fall walk. The crowds of the summer have dissipated, the leaves are golden and green and mushrooms are popping up on the forest floor and beside sidewalks. There’s lots to see and do outdoors in the fall, so why not pack up the kids and go for a walk?
