My husband and I have been huge fans of Burgoo for years. We’ve spent many a weekend trekking up to their West 10th location, or venturing over to Main Street for some of their great comfort food. So we were absolutely ecstatic when this Vancouver restaurant opened on West 4th in Kitsilano not too long ago. The owners haven’t strayed from their cozy decor: wood tones, chunky furniture, and vintage travel posters abound.
Comfort Food at its Best
It’s hard to pick one or two dishes that we love. What’s so great about Burgoo is the variety of their menu and the fact that, no matter who we are with, we all find something we are craving. I’m a huge fan of the fondue (great for sharing) and the French onion soup. My husband is partial to their namesake dish: the Kentucky burgoo (a slow-cooked stew) and the lamb tagine. Kids love the macaroni and cheese (thick elbow noodles with tons of melted cheese) and the gooey cheese grillers. But really – everything is good at this Vancouver restaurant! And everything should be eaten with a side of their cheddar cheese and parsley biscuits.

Of course, Burgoo has some great, fresh, lighter fare. Their spring menu is now in effect, so they offer daily spring soups and sandwiches, not to mention spring greens. I could eat the dressing on this salad every day. The Vancouver restaurant also offers a fabulous vegetarian sandwich called the vegiterranean.
No Matter the Occasion
Burgoo is a great place to take your kids for lunch or dinner. The lively atmosphere is entertaining and the staff are friendly and understanding. I recently went out with some girlfriends for dinner, and we had a great time lingering over their great wine and beer list and chatting late into the evening. The atrium out front is bright and airy, and will be a fantastic destination on summer nights.
Burgoo is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. But a note to early risers: they don’t open until 11:00 am.
