Vancouver Restaurant: The Mac Shack – CLOSED

CLOSED
There are few dishes that make me as happy as a good macaroni and cheese, so when I discovered the Mac Shack in Kerrisdale, I was smitten. A Vancouver restaurant devoted to the art of Mac and Cheese? Perfection.
The decor is modern yet funky – think quartz counter tops and tables mixed with dark wood and orange and yellow subway tiles. There are a few booths (suitable for pulling a highchair up to) as well as one big booth for large groups. The rest of the tables are hightops.
Choose your own Macventure
The basic Mac and Cheese starts at $6, which is very reasonable (it’s very filling so I advise against ordering anything other than the regular size for one person). The Veggie Mac features mixed vegetables in a cheesy tomato sauce (my strategy for getting veggies into my son). The more adventurous can go for the Brooklyn (Naramata blue cheese and sirloin steak) or the Lobster Mac (Asiago and Cheddar cheese, oyster mushrooms, herbs, and truffle oil in a creamy sauce). I’m waiting until bathing suit season has come and gone to dig into that one.
You can also customize your mac and cheese by choosing your pasta, sauce, cheese(s), veggies, meat, as well as toppings and other flavor “enhancers” such as Truffle oil, garlic butter, or crispy panko breadcrumbs on top. The Mac Shack’s sauces are all gluten-free and you can order gluten free pasta as well for a wheat-free meal. There’s a kids menu at this Vancouver restaurant as well, offering a Mac and Cheese, drink (milk, juice, or water) and a cookie for $6.
Visit the Vancouver Restaurant
We’ve yet to dive in to one of the Mac Shack’s tantalizing desserts, but both the “squish” (their version of an ice cream sandwich) and the skillet brownie look great.
While this Vancouver restaurant can be very busy during peak times (think weekend lunches and dinners), we’ve managed to get in and out relatively quick during off-peak times by going a bit earlier than the lunch / dinner rushes. The staff are young and friendly and they seem genuinely excited to be there.
The Mac Shack is open daily from 11:00am until 9:00pm and offers take-out service.
