“There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.”
Elizabeth Lawrence

Finally it seems as if the warm days of summer are upon us. Shedding our rain gear and Wellingtons, Vancouverites embrace their sunhats, sunglasses, and sunscreen and rise to meet the possibilities that long days of light bring.

Summer seems to be tailored for children. Who doesn’t have vivid memories of the sights, sounds and smells of summer? We are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the ocean, mountains, forests and city at our doorstep. One of my favourite neighbourhoods to spend time in with my kids is Kitsilano. Below are a few of my child-friendly summer-time hangouts in the beachy community of Kits.

The playground

If you haven’t already been, the new playground right at Kits Beach is a huge hit. Go early, stay late, but expect crowds – this is quite possibly the playground with the best view in Vancouver.

The beach

After a tour or two of the playground, it’s inevitable that you will land up on the beach. A few short steps away and you and your little ones can settle in by the water. Bring your sand toys and expect to stay for a while. However, be prepared, my last trip with my daughters had me finding sand in my house for days after our visit.

Cool sunglasses are a must! These eighties inspired Ray-Bans appeal to those of us who still yearn to sing “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama while pushing our strollers through the sunny streets.

The food

After a hard day at the beach, you can drop in to The Boathouse, located right at Kits Beach. They have two fabulous features: an incredible view and a kids menu.

The sunsets

As the sun starts to sink and wander down the horizon, you can bid farewell to Kits Beach…

And head to my favourite place to catch the sunset – Spanish Banks.

With the sun rising early and the sun setting late, there is so much time to explore this great neighbourhood. As we head into the dog days of summer, make sure to spend a few of them soaking up summer in Kitsilano.

What makes the sunset? What makes the moonrise? Is it my love for you?
