Is the thought of taking your child to get their first haircut, with the inevitable tantrum, causing you to think that safety scissors and a glass of wine might be a better option? Put the wine glass down, ladies. We now have options. Melonhead, a hair salon designed with children in mind, has come to our rescue. Whether they decide to sit in the car, helicopter, motorcycle or Thomas the Train chair, they will enjoy the experience watching their favourite show on one of the many big screen TV’s.

With 16 locations across Canada, Melonhead’s Kitsilano location is the first to open up in B.C. In November, they will be celebrating their second birthday. Whether you call for an appointment or just want to walk-in, Melonhead will accommodate. But remember: the weekends are their busiest time, so you may want to call ahead so you don’t have an upset child on your hands (we know how hard it is for our little ones to be patient).

Four-year-old Aila (picture below) says her favourite thing about coming to Melonhead is sitting in the chairs –  the Thomas the Train chair is her favourite.

The majority of the children love the experience. Once they have experienced Melonhead, they look forward to coming back. But even if your child is on the timid side, the staff is very patient and understanding, and can work with your child to calm his or her nerves. Regular stylist chairs are also available for the child who is too old to sit in the Thomas the Train chair or for parents who want to sit while calming an apprehensive child. And while you are already in the chair you might as well get your hair cut too; Melonheads’ licenced hair stylists can cut your hair while your children are kept occupied watching TV or playing with toys.

I brought my own two-year-old daughter during the interview and she got her first haircut, which also included a photo with her new hairstyle, a certificate and a lock of hair for a keepsake. She loved the experience and the whole process was easy as pie. Melonhead has a great selection of Canadian-made hair products. We tried their Fuzzy Wuzzn’t Detangler and now swear by it. It removes any tangles and leaves her baby curls looking beautiful.

Once your child’s haircut is complete, she can choose from color or glitter spray and the girls get a cute clip or fancy braids. To top it all off, kids are given a lollipop and a ride on their coin operated horse – on the house!

All haricuts are $20 for the children, $25 for Dads and $35 for Moms. Melonhead is open seven days a week: Mon – Sat 9:30 – 6:00 and Sunday 11:00 – 5:00.

And, if you want, you can still go home and have that glass of wine.
