A Great Local Yarn Shop: Urban Yarns

Ever since the weather has cooled off I have felt an itch to take on a fall knitting project, but that sweater I started last winter and never quite finished is still sitting in my knitting basket. I was hesitant to start something new that would take up too much time. So I decided to ease back into the swing of things by tackling a small project, and while at it, teach myself to crochet at the same time. First, I needed yarn, and for that I needed a yarn shop.

Off I went to Urban Yarns. It had been years since I had been to this West 10th yarn shop. A few times more recently I have ordered yarn from them online. Their easy to use and super convenient online store has come in handy more than a couple of times when Ravelry tells me they carry the recommended yarn for a particular project. Being the lazy yet impulsive shopper that I am, I’m a sucker for online shopping. But despite this convenience, there’s nothing quite like being able to touch and feel the yarn for yourself and choose your colour in true light.

Simple crochet cowl pattern in hand, I arrived at Urban Yarns in need of assistance. My knowledge of choosing the right kind of yarn for a particular project is sketchy at best and I always rely on the far more knowledgeable and experienced yarn shop employees to guide me. On this particular trip, I was helped by a very friendly and knowledgeable woman who quickly pointed me in the direction of more than half a dozen weights and types of yarn that would work for my pattern. After spending a long time comparing colours, tones and textures, I finally made my choice.

Urban Yarns has a great variety yarns and accessories and provided plenty for me gawk at. While yarn isn’t breakable and Urban Yarns appeared to be pretty kid-friendly, I was grateful that I didn’t bring my daughter with me to the store, as she would have had the time of her life pulling down ball after ball, skein after skein, and admiring all the pretty colours. Alone, I got to do that for myself, without all the embarrassing clean-up afterwards.

Urban Yarns also offers a variety of classes for knitters and crocheters of all skill levels. That might be just what I need to improve my skills and take this much beloved hobby of mine to a new level.
