Baby Bum Balms
At one point or another, most of us will have to contend with the dreaded red flare-up of diaper rash. While traditional drugstore-variety diaper rash creams might clear up the rash in a flash, a handful of companies are producing quality creams that do also the trick without the classic zinc that many of us are trying to avoid. We’ve rounded up a few of these plant-based creams and put them to the test.
Dimpleskins
Dimpleskins is a company based in New Westminster that makes natural zinc-free creams for you and your little ones. Their Bum Bum Balm is handmade with organic calendula and lavender and lives up to Dimpleskin’s promise of “Never a chemical. Never a worry.”
Our reviewer said the balm had a nice, non-invasive scent and that it spread well and cleared up the irritation quickly.
Lalabee Bathworks
Lalabee Bathwork’s Bottom Balm is made with 90% organic and 100% natural ingredients, including calendula, chamomile and lavender infused into organic oils and natural beeswax. This balm is the company’s best-selling product.
What did our reviewer think? “Nice smell and easy to spread although it did tend to harden a bit after sitting for awhile.”
Théra Wise
Théra Wise is based in Vancouver and makes all-natural plant therapy ointments that are sold in BPA and phthalate-free packaging. Their Natural Baby Diaper Ointment is made from calendula, organic chamomile and burdock root.
Though our reviewer said the ointment had a bit of a strong smell, she said it can be used on particularly nasty rashes and liked that it can do double-duty and work on cuts as well.
Matter Company
Matter Company, based in Toronto, was founded by a certified Therapeutic Herbalist who wanted to create non-petroleum-based skincare for friends and families. Its Nappy Rash Ointment is made from calendula, marshmallow root, St. John’s wort, yarrow and myrrh powder.
Our reviewer says this cream has a nice smell and cleaned up rashes quick. However, the small canister was difficult to open, especially mid-diaper change with a kicking baby.
