Green Shopping Guide: Keeping Clean and Outfitting Baby

We’re talking about Earth Day all month long on VancouverMom.ca, and this week we’ll be sharing some of our reader’s earth-friendly green shopping picks. If you want to green your life, or just find a friendlier alternative to your current laundry soap, we’ve got you covered. Today, we’re sharing your go-to sustainable products for keeping clean and outfitting baby.

Green Shopping: Keeping Clean

We know you want to stay clean – and you want your home and car to be clean, too. But isn’t it better to do it without exposing yourself and your kids to a lot of toxic ingredients? Here’s our green shopping guide for cleaners and personal care.

  • On Facebook Melissa Skoda recommended Maid Natural Cleaning, saying, “[They] use some great non-toxic earth friendly products, especially when cleaning floors, so that you kids don’t ingest toxins.”
  • On Facebook Britt Baxter-Bellas and Bumbini Cloth Diaper Company gave the thumbs-up to Pink Solution. Britt uses it to clean everything, and Bumbini says it gets the stains out of anything.
  • On Twitter Sea to Sky Car Wash recommended their own services as an environmentally-friendly car wash.
  • On Twitter Yaya Baby Boutique suggests Nellie’s Natural Laundry Soda for your clothes-washing.
  • Our West Side Contributor Erin Cooper loves Sapadilla for their soap, laundry detergent and household cleaners.
  • Erin also recommends Andalou Naturals Haircare. She says, “We buy it at Whole Foods and it’s the first natural shampoo that actually packs enough moisture!”
  • Our Content Manager Amber Strocel likes NatureClean’s Treehouse line of personal care products for kids, saying, “My kids love the cartoon characters, and I love that the products don’t contain lots of nasty toxins.”
  • Amber also gives the thumbs-up to Dr. Bronner’s castille soap. “It’s made from organic and fair trade vegetable oils, it’s biodegradable, and a little bit goes a long way. I use it for everything from hand-washing to scrubbing the toilets.”

Green Shopping: Outfitting Baby

When you have a baby, you have baby gear. But how do you outfit your little one and tread gently on the earth at the same time? Here’s our green shopping guide for baby gear.

  • On Facebook Bumbini Cloth Diaper Company shared her pick, saying, “For my babies’ bums it’s cloth diapers (a little biased!).”
  • Continuing the cloth diaper love on Facebook, Happy Baby Daily Needs Online Store recommends Charlie Banana cloth diapers and training pants.
  • On Twitter Yaya Baby Boutique upped the ante by sending her diaper love to Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers.
  • Our publisher Christine Pilkington loves the OXO Tot line of dishes and cutlery. They’re BPA, phthalate and PVC free. Christine says, “OXO really helps toddlers transition to ‘big’ utensils, while minimizing the frustration and mess.”
  • Our Content Manager Amber Strocel is a big fan of the Beco Butterfly baby carrier. She says, “One carrier works for kids from seven to 45 pounds, they let you do a front and back carry, and many designs feature organic cotton exteriors.”
  • Amber also loves Bamboobies Waterproof Heart-Shaped Breastfeeding Pads. “Pretty much every nursing mom has dealt with leaking. These breast pads are reusable and soft, so you’re not making as much waste as you would with disposables. The heart shape is less visible through clothing than the traditional circle, plus it’s just plain cute.”
