Article by Marilyn Belsham, who has the scoop on the new Richmond IKEA store.
Chomping at the Bit
If you have been out and about in the City of Richmond any time within the last few months or so, you’ve probably noticed the construction progressing on the brand new IKEA Richmond store located near the old IKEA Richmond store at 3320 Jacombs Road.
IKEA is well known for providing products and home furnishings that are well designed and priced low. I am personally a huge fan of IKEA and shop there frequently – specifically at the Richmond location which has had an IKEA store since 1976. I’ve been eying the progress on the construction eagerly and have been chomping at the bit to finally be allowed inside the new store. Not only is the new store much, much bigger than the old store, but the parking lot is too. This means that the crazy Saturday crush in the IKEA parking lot should hopefully be a thing of the past.
One Really Big Store
The new Richmond IKEA is a tiny bit larger than the Coquitlam location at 334,004 square feet (that equals really big). It also has almost three times the parking stalls, as well as 100 bicycle parking spots, and a restaurant with over 600 seats making it six times the size of the old restaurant space.
I was allowed to tour the new Richmond IKEA store this week just prior to its official Grand Opening on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, and I can see improvements in every area of the store. Bigger elevators that are front and centre instead of hidden away, which improves access for everyone. Wider spaces in the shopping areas, more inspiration “rooms”, and a much nicer waiting area in the furniture pick-up section (I just had to buy myself a dining room table while I was on the tour).
Richmond IKEA Grand Opening
Opening day is today, and IKEA Canada would love for everyone to celebrate the launch of its shiny new store in Richmond. You can be the first to experience the 1.5 km walk through the new store. There will also be magicians, face painters and jugglers to entertaining the crowd as well as a traditional Lion Dotting Ceremony to honour Richmond’s diverse cultural community.
