The Sum of Great Style: The Marriage of Leggings and Jeans

Guest post by Joyce Lau.

An often misunderstood and abused style on the street is the marriage of leggings and jeans, known as “jeggings”.   Meant to be more body hugging than typical skinny jeans, jeggings in most cases are leggings with design elements such as pockets, stitching and colouring similar to a pair of jeans.

So what is a functional yet style-seeking mom to do with this trend? It’s simple. It comes down to asking yourself a few honest questions:

  1. Do you absolutely love your lower half? We’re not just talking about your legs. You have to L-O-V-E your hips, butt, thighs, knees, calves etc.
  2. Does a pair of jeggings go with your current wardrobe? (I.e do you need to buy a whole lot of tops to go with it?)
  3. Will you feel absolutely confident and enjoy showing off this trend?

If you answered “yes” to these three questions, you should run right out and grab yourself a fun pair of jeggings to update your wardrobe.  But if you’re not absolutely sure, here’s an easy way to try out this look without breaking the bank.

Start with darker coloured jeggings that have a more modest fit than one that would show every single nook and crack of your lower half.  Keep things simple for your first pair.  Try the pair above for less than $15 for a non-committal trial run.  Start with baby steps.  Ease into it with a longer T-shirt like this one for $21.  It’ll give you more butt and crotch coverage.  Then add a sophisticated touch by layering a tweed jacket in a modern cut.  It’s a great way to bring in a new trend by grounding the look with a classic appeal.  Then finish off the outfit with a fun flirty pump.  The teal colour and ruffle detail gives the entire outfit a sweet & understated look.  For less than $70, you can freshen up so many pieces in your closet.  Think of how it’ll make that LBD so much more special.
