Vancouver Mom Style: Black to Basics

A few weeks ago I attended an event dressed head to toe in black: black dress, tights, boots, and leather jacket. I felt confident that I would not experience a wardrobe malfunction dressed in my monochrome, flattering, uncomplicated assemble. I moved with ease through the crowd knowing I was not drawing unwanted attention to myself while feeling elegant and professional. Had I found a new Vancouver mom style essential?
Black is the New Black for Vancouver Mom Style
The comfort I found in wearing all black was a startling revelation to me. For the last few years I’ve been experimenting with prints and sporting my share of bright bottoms. It was fun to embrace these trends until I realized that my excitement about the looks I was creating was hindered whenever I walked into an event and suddenly felt self-conscious and uncomfortable. It was not until my all black night that I realized that this non-colour was the key to flattering my figure and feeling self-assured.
Wearing black will always be universally flattering and while it is fun to try out the latest trends, getting back to black may be your key to feeling and looking fabulous! If you are a Vancouver Mom wanting to get black to basics, here are some of our choices for best black basics in your city!
Pleather Jeggings
I know it might sound risqué, but most moms are already sporting leggings on a regular basis. Why not jazz things up a bit and add a little texture to your look. These black jeggings can go from day to night; paired with a t-shirt during the day and a blouse for an evening out. The beauty of these jeggings is they are thick enough to cover your underwear, or your butt cheeks for that matter (I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it!).
Zara
Black Pointy Pumps
Black pointy pumps are a Vancouver mom style essential. They elongate your leg, are always classy and can be worn for work or out to dinner. A black pair of heels can be paired with almost any colour (because we know you can’t wear black all the time!) of pants, skirts, shorts dresses and everything in between.
Aldo
The Perfect Black Tee
A black tee can be layered or stand on it’s own on a warm evening (spring’s around the corner Vancouver!). Oversized black tees are trendy and flattering on most body types. Looking for the perfect black tee? I swear by this one!
Urban Outfitters
The Black Jacket
It’s a perfect pairing that locally-made Lululemon has created a black jacket with the title The Out and About Jacket. This jacket is as cute in the back as it is in the front. Like most Lululemon pieces it is incredibly versatile and is created to be body skimming with hip and bum coverage. The peplum detailing in the back is flattering and fancies up this jacket to make it a practical Vancouver mom style piece for a bike ride or a cover up on a casual date.

The Little Black Dress
It’s always tempting to buy the latest style of dress (think floral and aztec prints) but the little black dress will never go out of style. It’s best to look for a modest length that will bode well in the work place, at a dinner with the in-laws or picking up a child. Do the sit-down-test and makes sure your unmentionables are covered!
Judith and Charles
Spring might be in the air, Vancouver moms, but don’t feel like you have to dress like a flower! To get some extra spring in your step, experiment with black basics and brighten the look with bold and bright accessories.
