Where to view the solar eclipse safely on Monday

There’s a rare and exciting solar eclipse taking place tomorrow –  Monday (August 21st) in the morning. The partial eclipse (roughly 85%), where the moon covers the sun, for takes about 2.5 minutes, but the movement of the coverage takes place over about 2.5 hours.

How to safely view the eclipse!

  • Start of eclipse: 9:10 am
  • Maximum: 10:21 am
  • End of eclipse: 11:37 am

Places to view the Solar Eclipse safely with the kids

All events take place on Monday August 21st from approximately 9 until noon. Many of these events offer live indoor viewing if you are concerned about the kids eyes.

HR MacMillan Space Centre

The HR MacMillan Space Centre is celebrating with a big community viewing party. They’ll have a selection of solar telescopes, live streams, sun projections, and, of course, solar eclipse glasses for safe viewing. Join them on the grass outside of their Gordon Southam Observatory for this once in a lifetime event. During and after the viewing, the Space Centre will be open (you must pay admission) for special, eclipse-themed shows and activities.

Science World

Science World has partnered with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada to offer a free viewing party that runs all day long. Includes eclipse-themed science activities, a viewing party and demonstrations. Eclipse viewers will be available while supplies last. Live coverage of the eclipse will also take place in the Science Theatre from 10 am to 5 pm

Robson Square

The UBC Astronomy Club is hosting its gathering at Robson Square. The club says its will have scopes and safety goggles for everyone and is billed as kid-friendly.
