Animal Statues

Kids get a kick out of seeing art constructed in familiar shapes like their favourite animals. Put a fun twist on a boring errand run with the kids by paying a visit to one of these animal sculptures.
The Bull, The Royal Sweet Diamond
Crafted in bronze, this bull was created by Canadian artist Joe Fafard.
475 West Georgia Street, Vancouver
The Birds
These sparrows by Myfanway Macleod were installed after the 2010 Winter Olympics in the Olympic Village. At five metres tall the kids will be in awe of these giant creatures. Of interest to parents but too scary for kids, The Birds were inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name.
Southeast False Creek Olympic Plaza
Orca, The Killer Whale
Kids will think this pixelated whale is reminiscent of a giant Lego build; parents will be interested to know that it was created by local author/artist Douglas Coupland.
1055 Canada Place, Vancouver
Vancouver Museum Crab
A perfect pit spot on a family bike ride around the Kitsilano Sea Wall. Fun fact: the crab represents a First Nations legend that tells of a crab guarding the entrance to the harbour. And there’s a fountain.
1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver, (604) 736-4431
Poodle on Main
A great get the kids thinking’ art installation. At first glance it’s just a dog. But then ask your kids these questions (and get a few giggles as well): Why is there a poodle on a 25 foot pole? Who’s poodle is it? How’d the poodle get up there? Do they think the poodle is art? Why or why not?
