June is here, and the days are getting warmer and longer. There’s a definite feel of summer in the air. If you’re making your bucket list for summer 2014, we have some ideas. All week long we’re sharing our 20 favourite ways to get out and enjoy summer in Vancouver. Up today? Numbers 11 through 15.
Summer in Vancouver: Five (More) Ways to Enjoy It
11. Play in a Spray Park
A visit to a spray park is a great way to enjoy summer in Vancouver on a hot day. Many of them are adjacent to playgrounds so your kids can move back and forth. Or, if you have one kid who loves to splash and one kid who prefers to stay dry, you can keep an eye on both and everyone is happy. Need some ideas of where to go? Check out our Best of Vancouver: Spray Park Search from 2013.
12. Take a Walk in a Garden
Summer in Vancouver is a time when gardens are in full bloom, so if you enjoy seeing all the flowers to their best advantage this is the time to go. From Van Dusen to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen to Queen Elizabeth Park to the UBC Botanical Garden there are lots to choose from. So make sure you take the time to tiptoe through the tulips!
13. Read a Book
It isn’t summer without a great summer read. Make sure your tablet is stocked up with some new selections, or visit your local bookstore for some real live paper books. If you don’t want to spend money, you can also pay a visit to the library. While you’re there, sign your kids up for the Summer Reading Club. Registration starts June 13, 2014 for kids from preschool on up. Your kids will get stickers and a medal when they finish, and there are special events all summer long.
14. Visit a Farm
Summer is a great time to visit a farm, get up close and personal with some animals, and sample some local food. Here in Vancouver Southlands Farm and the UBC Farm are both great places to show your kids where their food comes from. On the North Shore Maplewood Farm will give your kids a chance to pet a goat and a rabbit, watch a cow being milked and more. Or hit the road for a Circle Farm Tour in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley.
15. Eat a Meal from a Food Truck
Yesterday we mentioned going on a picnic this summer in Vancouver. Another way to dine al fresco is to visit a food truck. There are food trucks and carts all around town, of course. Or check out the Food Cart Fest, firing up on June 22, 2014. The bonus is that your kids can run around and play outside while you enjoy your food. It’s all the upsides of dining out with none of the downsides.
