Where to Eat in Vancouver: Yellow-Quill Café

where to eat in vancouver yellow quillNestled on a quiet stretch of 10th Avenue, between Kingsway and Prince Edward, there’s a pretty fantastic little café where you can get a piece of hot, homemade bannock slathered with butter and a bit of jam, if you want it, with a cup of tea and it’s quiet. Though the food is delicious, the hours are weird and as a result, it never seems too busy. But the prices are good, and if you’re in Mount Pleasant around lunch time, it’s definitely a great answer for where to eat in Vancouver.

Bannock for Breakfast

I don’t work in the area but I live nearby, and I like to pop in on occasion for breakfast. On weekends they’re open at 9:00 am, and you can dine in or take your food to go. Yellow-Quill Café is right beside Buy Low Foods, so you can get your grocery shopping done early and then relax over a cup of coffee and a bannock breakfast sandwich. The bannock is made fresh, the eggs are scrambled until fluffy and never overdone, and you can get sausage or bacon and the cheese is real Cheddar cheese, all melty and gooey and perfect. Not into breakfast sandwiches? (Why would you not be into breakfast sandwiches?) Try the wild rice and corn potato pancakes.

Definitely try their pulled bison sandwich if you’re there for lunch – it’s a clever variation on pulled pork, with rhubarb barbecue sauce, and it’s served on bannock (that magical fried bread that manages to somehow be both crispy and cloud-like). Don’t do meat? There are vegetarian options as well.

A Quiet Little Place off the Main Drag

Yellow-Quill Café is kid-friendly, and the place is spacious enough that if you were packing a stroller, there’s room for it. And it’s quiet. Though it’s on a bike route, it’s not the kind of place you’d just pop into while shopping – it’s a block and a half off Main Street, so you have to really mean to go there. But parking is easy, and transit is close, and the food is delicious and just different enough that it’s worth it to go a little out of your way.

Why not check out Yellow-Quill Café for breakfast this weekend? No line, plenty of seating, and fried bread. Bannock. I cannot emphasize this enough. This is definitely where to eat in Vancouver for bannock.
