Birthday Party Preparations: Five Must-Have Items

birthday party preparationsWhen you’re throwing a birthday party for your child, you’ve got a lot on your plate. It’s no surprise that sometimes things fall through the cracks. To help you in your planning, we suggest making a list well in advance so that nothing gets forgotten. Today we have five small items to include on that list. Sure, they may seem obvious, but we have it on good authority that at least one Vancouver mom has forgotten about them in the rush of birthday party preparations. While these little oversights make for a funny story in later years, pretty much any parent would prefer to avoid them. After all, who needs more stress?

  • Birthday Candles: The big moment has arrived – it’s time for the birthday boy or girl to blow out the candles. You don’t want to discover in this moment that there aren’t any candles in the house. Luckily your birthday party preparations are simplified as most bakeries stock them so you can pick them up with your cake.
  • Matches or a Lighter: Must-have item number two follows directly from must-have item number one. In order to blow out those birthday candles, they need to be lit in the first place. Make sure you have matches or a lighter. And if you have a lighter, make sure it’s working.
  • Dishes and Cutlery: You’ve squared away the food and cake, but do you have anything to eat it all with? A birthday party isn’t going to be quite the same if you’re missing a knife to cut the cake with, cups for the drinks or plates for the food.
  • Something to Drink: You’ve got food. You’ve got cake. You’ve got dishes, cutlery, goodie bags, decorations and party hats. Don’t forget the beverages in your birthday party preparations. Kids are running around playing, they’ll get thirsty. Water is totally fine for kids, but juice or punch is always fun. Our contributor Jackie suggests Pimms for the moms, if you want the other parents to love you.
  • A Cooler and Ice: If you’re not at home, you’ll need a way to keep food cool. The birthday party won’t be nearly as fun if someone contracts food poisoning. Even if salmonella doesn’t show up, you’ll want to keep your drinks cold and make sure the icing doesn’t melt. Lots of ice is also good to add to drinks, especially if there will be grown-ups.
