Help Local Food Banks this Spring

While spring signals growth and renewal for most of us, it unfortunately means dwindling resources for food banks. Here in BC, food banks assist an average of 96,100 people every month, and 30% of them are children. This is a sobering statistic, but the good news is that you can help. From now until May 9, 2013, grocery shoppers can donate food and money to the Extra Helping™ Food Drive at their local Real Canadian Superstore®, nofrills® and Extra Foods® stores.

“Hunger is a reality for far too many families and individuals in British Columbia,” says Laura Lansink, Executive Director for Food Banks BC. “The Extra Helping™ Food Drive is essential in helping local food banks replenish their stock and address the issue of hunger in our communities. And, one hundred per cent of the food raised in the community, stays with the local community food banks.”

Most-Needed Items

If you’d like to help, here are the most-needed non-perishable food items:

  • Canned fish and meat
  • Natural peanut butter
  • Whole-wheat pasta and rice
  • Pasta sauce
  • Low sodium meals in a can (hearty soups, stews, chili, etc.)
  • Canned fruit and vegetables
  • Whole grain and low sugar cereals
  • Baby food, formula and supplies such as diapers

You’ll find these most-needed items by looking for the shelf tags featuring the Extra Helping™ logo at participating stores. So, you don’t need to remember the whole list in order to make a difference.

The Need Lasts All Year Long

The participating stores are part of Loblaw Companies Limited, which hopes to raise $1.8 million and 1.8 million pounds of food in 2013. “As Canada’s largest grocery retailer, we’re committed to helping fight hunger in communities across the country,” says Peggy Hornell, senior director, Community Investment, Loblaw Companies Limited. “We encourage all of our customers to make any amount of cash donation or non-perishable food items they can, so together we can make a real difference in the lives of those in need.”

The need doesn’t end once the big holiday food drives are over, for BC’s food banks. By lending a helping hand, you can ensure that the tens of thousands of children who depend on our province’s food banks aren’t going hungry this spring.
