Life As We Know It… Is Pretty Great Right Now

Want to watch Josh Duhamel for 1 hour and 52 minutes? Who wouldn’t!  Life As We Know It, his newest film alongside Katherine Heigl, is a funny and tearful look at life, parenthood and what we all endure to raise a child and make a family.  This film might be your typical Hollywood “chick flick” but it packed in a bit more than expected and makes you think , for at least a moment,  that life as we all know it can really change in the blink of an eye.

After a tragic car accident leaves Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl) and Eric “Mess” Messer (Josh Duhamel) to care for their best friends’ small daughter, the two godparents are constantly at odds as they start on this unique journey into parenthood.  Like all new parents, they must figure out how to raise a child, pay the bills, stay on track with their careers, get along and stay somewhat sane.

Bakery owner Holly is the always perky and cute single gal who is searching for her “Mr. Right “ (not a big stretch from every other character Katherine Heigl has played). Josh Duhamel is the typical “sports and sex” good looking dude and works as a TV sports assistant director and is searching for his “Ms. Right Now”. Their lives are turned upside down and sideways and the carefree single life that they knew is gone in an instant.  The fun begins when the two (who absolutely despise each other) work on building a new life with a one-year-old and make a family out of the chaos.

Some of the scenes will hit close to home for many of us parents as we recognize a few of the many mistakes and mishaps we all made when starting out.  Diapering dilemmas, feeding frenzies and crying catastrophes are all in there.    Hopefully none of us has hired a cab driver to babysit or had to use a baseball cap as a toilet…but it does remind us of a few of our own embarrassing escapades.   While most of the movie will have you giggling, a few scenes will have you weeping. If you don’t have a will in place when you see this movie, you definitely will be calling an attorney as soon as you get out of the theatre.

Sure, Life As We Know It is your typical romantic comedy.  It has a pretty predictable plot and very obvious ending. Life as we all knew it (pre-kids) is gone, but the new life we have all built is pretty fantastic and this movie gently reminds us of it. It’s a fun movie to watch with your girlfriends (husbands will not be interested) and if all else fails, you get to watch Josh Duhamel for 1 hour and 52 minutes.

Life As We Know It opens in theatres today.
