The Sum of Great Style: Salute To The New Military Styles

By VancouverMom.ca Contributor Joyce Lau

Wouldn’t it be the day if your kids listened to every word you say and no one dared to question your authority?

Sigh. That day may never come but who said you can’t pretend? This fall, military styles are coming in full force. Army pants and camouflage tops might not be your thing, but here’s how you can get everyone to stand in attention.

Before you put away all your summer clothes, this outfit will help to maximize what you already own. Start with one of your basic casual Ts. Since we’re going with a monochromatic serious look, pick a light pink or a white T as a base. This will add a bit of contrast and softness to your outfit. Next, go and get yourself a great fitting military jacket. For less than $40, this one has good button detailing and a strong lapel. You can wear it open with the sleeves rolled up for a casual effortless look or button it up for some added shape.

If you already own a pair of skinny jeans but need a bit a variety, a gray one will do the trick. Given that you’re wearing a “don’t mess with me” kind of jacket, a faded lighter bottom makes it less structured and strict looking. For only $13 and change, it’ll be a nice addition to your closet. Think of all the different tops you can wear with it! Chunky sweaters, cardigans and even a crisp dress shirt. However, skinny jeans isn’t for everyone. For the curvier mom, stick with a pair of trouser cut jeans or boot cut for a less skin tight effect.

Of course, the best part of playing military mom is shouting all your orders. But since that isn’t going to work, you can have fun with your accessories! Make sure you don’t wear this outfit with runners of any kind. Toughen up with this pair of brown booties. The straps and metal studs makes it super stylish and gives your outfit the right attitude. But you’re not done yet. Add some pretty to that tough exterior with this studded elastic bracelet. Now you’re in command.
